Yikes!
it's been a month since I used this thing...

On the 4th, I was involved in a family show at the Record Archive, stuff is still up for a few more days. Carla Bartow, a studio mate from my illustration days of yore, stopped by during the opening and even passed props via her blog. Least I can do is return the favor:

On the 10th, I saw a screening of 'Megunica' at the Little, followed by a QandA with the director Lorenzo Fonda and Tom Gasek.

I made some doodles at the event, then gave them to Lorenzo and Tom afterward. Lorenzo put up the sketch on his website and sent along a shout out. Aside from his film ventures, he has some killer sketchbooks up there scanned in their entirety that are worthy of an extended gander.

Here's the first spread from my current sketchbook. This book was made in-flight to Texas, on my way to the CAID conference this summer. The bottom page is a sketch of me sketching on the plane. The top is mostly random. I took apart an instant photo and put part of the film on top as an overlay.

1. Before you go to bed, doodle while your mind is sorta loose and sloppy. Leave it to cool over night, and wait to read until the next morning. Most times you won't remember what in the hell you were thinking about, or how you connected the dots. The results are bound to be cathartic on some level - but similar blowing your nose, you don't need to study a used tissue too hard to know you had a good sneeze!

2. Sprout from a random scribble: what does it look like/remind you of? Retrace the line, or look at it from another direction. This requires no fancy art schooling, or even drawing experience for that matter. You'll be surprised what you can make and where your scribbles can take you...

3. The most spontaneous and spicy kind of doodle-noodle soup (below) is actually the easiest to make (when you have some help). Passing a pen and paper can be the best way to bide time that is passing extraordinarily slow, while getting a fresh perspective.

An edge of the Manhattan skyline over an industrious Brooklyn blockade.

The last handful of years I've made sure to aim for the city every couple months to putter around and routinely overdose on art. At the center of these trips is a community of North Carolinian skateboarders who are peppered all across Brooklyn. From this group I usually find a couch to borrow, which is always served with grade A southern hospitality.

The Sketch above was made during a roof party on top of Joseph's art colony, located in the outskirts of Clinton Hill. To honor Memorial Day, there was a consistently heated dice game going on around beers and grilled goodness. The colony takes up a entire factory building in one of the most comfortable and inspiring set-ups I've ever seen in the city. Check out some of Joseph's paintings here, and keep an eye out for the regular BlueTan shows he is involved with, which pop up all around the country.

This was from my first solo trip to the city when I was 19, sketched from a window reflection on the train. After being accepted to Pratt, I was going down to visit the campus and see some old friends. Due to a series of events, I found myself locked out of a friends apartment, where all of my things had been dropped off earlier. Without a plan B, I ended up spending the night in the subway. I discovered that the E train didn't announce each stop (as did all the other homeless subway refugees that evening), which allowed almost an hour of sleep between each full circuit.

At 9:30 am, I made my way over to Pratt where other perspective students and their families eagerly awaited the tour. I don't know for certain, but I expect I was the only one smelling like pickled cigarette butts and old milk.

Summer Jams

After a tedious commencement ceremony, Jamie and I each drank a pitcher of suds at the local watering hole to prepare for this Little Feat-serenaded rapture-sketch-jam at the Lilac Festival. We snuck behind the porta-potties to get into the VIP seating, and sat in the front row passing our sketchbooks back and forth. All of the watercolor was actually made with a bottle of root beer I found under the chair there, most likely from a person who had actually paid for fancy seats.

This was in a sketchbook from my California days. The dorms all shared the same network, so hundreds of itunes libraries were accessible the second you went online. I spent the good part of most nights perusing this sea of music and doodling. This picture sounds like Manteca to me...

The Story of the Korean Invasian with a side of Italian Nostalgia

The other night I got an email from an old friend. She had been teaching English in Korea, but was back stateside in NYC for a few months with students in tow helping to orchestrate a travel program. They had planned to visit Canada, but their tour had been canceled

last minute - could they stay for a night on their way?

students, the director of their school and my friend Angela are all
trudging their suitcases through the snow to our house. I helped to
set them up Lincoln-Log style in the living room, said my hellos and good-nights and went to bed. This is a sketch from the following

Great local fusion jazz band from last week's Sunday jazz night at the Lovin Cup. I had been reading art theory in the library all afternoon for a class, so a few beers and music was a welcome break. I spent some time at the bottom of the page tracking the hands of the musicians, inspired from the Octavio Paz reading I had been chewing through earlier.

The bottom spread is from last April in NYC, of a lazy afternoon spent at two highlights of Brooklyn that don't exist anymore. Horchatas at Magdas followed by a late night skate session at the Autumn Bowl with Brandon and a bag full of tallboys. The place was like the gothic cathedral of skateboarding: dark lofty ceilings with little flood lights dangled around, people wandering in and out at all times of the day and night. For mini Ramps and mexican food - RIP

So Ive decided I gotta use this blog thing.

Sketches from a night of fancy beers and cider at The Old Toad.
Its a bar in Rochester owned and run by a British crew. They've got all sorts of odds and ends on the walls that are fun to draw.

Im gonna try to post up something fresh from my daily dribble every week, and take the chance to pick an older page from my assorted library of sketchbooks. The one below is from a good 5 years ago, when I lived in Redlands.

They were notes from an Ethics class I took. This day we went around the room and talked about things that had effected our personal ethics. I drew a scribble for everyone in the class around the room, and tagged them each with a note from what they had said.  I don't remember much of it, but the conversation must have gotten loose because my tags are pretty random. Heres some highlights:

Last Summer, when I was studying in Orvieto, Italy, I bumped into this great free concert one of my first days in town. I was wandering the streets and followed the music until I found it - taking a seat without question when I realized they were serving free music with free glasses of wine. After drinking my fair share of wine and jamming out, I spilled a glass all over myself and my new sketchbook, and tried to cover up my sloppiness by working the stain into the sketch I was making (which is now the purple gray washes in the sketch). Afterward I got to chat with Gianluca, a Keyboardist, as well as Emanuel and Piero, a Singer and Drummer. I was inspired by the story of the band, which was founded almost entirely by members with Muscular Dystrophy. Gianluca, who I draw front and center, told me how the band was constantly losing and gaining members based on the progressions of the disease, yet how music continued to be a forward momentum for the band members, both present and past, in uniting them in their common musical passion.

Although I wrote down their contact information, I packed away the book after I got home and was unable to send them the sketch until I stumbled back onto it last night. The bands website is www.ladri.com, and an english translated version can be found here. Definitely worth checking out.

Tošo Dabac: Gradski Prizori/City Scenes

There is a clear line between visiting a place and living there. As soon as a place becomes a home, routines can fade fresh eyes and blur new perspectives. It was only a week after I stumbled starry-eyed from the plane and first waltzed down the streets of Dubrovnik that I found myself eyeing the slightly more recent visitors as those obnoxious tourists. In the bars at night, it is hard not to empathize with the locals as they grumble about the approaching tourist season. Wistfully they recall glossy memories of life before the cruise ships; where small family businesses outnumbered the overpriced souvenir sprawl and life in general was simpler. With these golden memories of the past in mind, the Modern Art Gallery of Dubrovnik has put on a show by Croatian Photographer Tošo Dabac to give form to nostalgia. Dating from the 1930’s to the 1960’s, the gallery presents a retrospective of Dabac's work through photos taken in both Zagreb and Dubrovnik.

Aside from his successful lifelong career in a variety of commercial art, Dabac's photos, taken on the clock and off, speak to the soul of Croatia. He is best know for a series called "Street People", where his documentation of Zagreb's poverty would come to represent the hopeless attitude of Eastern Europe after the first world war.

Spanning all four floors of the gallery, the show guides the audience from his most well known pieces to those more obscure. We are first introduced to the portraits from his famous "Street people" series, which face photos of Dubrovnik from 30 years later. Connecting these two walls are larger prints of commercial work from the years between, along with a stairway leading to upper floors that return to Zagreb and give more attention to Dabac's social awareness. Through some softer more tonal prints, these upper levels further reveal his compassion for the people and the times. Yet quickly after scanning the entire show I found myself walking back to the entrance, attracted to the contrasts of the first two walls. Aside from adequately displaying the artist’s interests and range, the show takes the opportunity to make an interesting comparison of Zagreb and Dubrovnik. Although taken at very different periods in history and in Dabac's life, they clearly express different attitudes in the locations themselves.

Zagreb is described through bold, boxy silhouettes. While industrious men plow forward, long cast shadows allude to a foreboding and uncertain future. Dubrovnik on the other hand appears casual and bright; we find children leaning out of trolley cars and idly feeding fish without any sense of purpose or direction. Bathing suits and strolling summer dresses join together in the hum of lazy summer. Yet interestingly enough, it is in Dubrovnik where a clear separation of class is expressed. One image displays sporting young men looking down from the city walls as older women carry their groceries in shadow below. Although bleak, the photos of Zagreb show a people united by struggle, my favorite being an image of men, women and children crowding around a hunched woman playing an accordion on the ground, her children surrounding her. The busy streets of Zagreb contrast with Dubrovnik’s empty marketplace, although ironically Dabac’s image of the beach is covered with people who swarm on top of each other like crabs.

More than an accumulative retrospective, the images selected for this show make an interesting statement about the impact of tourism, as well as the deep-rooted history of it within the region. The vacation-seeking summer flocks are not new after all. Right up the coast, Split has grown entirely from tourism; the city overflowing from the wall’s of a Roman emperor’s retirement home dating over 2300 years ago. Yet how does seasonal luxury influence the attitudes of people who must make ends meet year round?

With generations of change in between, Dabac’s photos capture relationships between spaces and culture that are still potent today. Similar to the New York City photographer Weegee, he managed to balance his social sensitivity while maintaining an outsider’s perspective even to subjects familiar to him. His images are also a reminder that over the years the cultural identity of a people may paint over portions of the collective memory.

With a refreshed perspective, I reenter Dubrovnik’s streets and make my way through chattering high school students and puttering clouds of tourists. I take a seat on the adjacent stairs overlooking the beach and catch wisps of disconnected foreign conversations. A few boys wrestle in the stones while a leash-less dog circles and instigates. Neither here nor there, I can again appreciate the subtle sparks of native life while somewhere beyond, the listless beach yawns and awaits the swollen cruise ships of summer to arrive.

When I was in Sarajevo, I met some drunk musicians wandering around the market at night who told me I had to check out this bar called the Underground. When we found it the following night, the stage was packed and this great band was playing. I had to elbow my way up front to get a good seat, but after the bassist saw I was sketching he saved my seat when I had to get up for drinks. Great musical conversations between all the instruments and vocals, I will update this post with the band name when I hear back from the Bassist.
I love drawing musicians, maybe its the challenge to capturing motion that I am attracted to, or the fact that I can share something back with them after they play in my drawings and hopefully return some inspiration.

The other weekend I went up to Split to skate with some Dubrovnik friends who go to school there. The night before I left I had a drink at Libertina and drew his array of beverages.

In split I got a tour of the skate spots via scooter, and waited until the last day to mingle with the lowly tourists to see Diocletian's palace. Here's some sketches and ramblings.

Napoleonic Fort

Today, despite the predictions of the Russian bartender last night, was beautiful. We decided to climb the small peak overlooking Dubrovnik to the Napoleonic fort, which he built when he took over the world. He constructed an impressive zig-zagging road as well which we followed to get there, through a spurting pine forest and plowed through craggy rocks. The fort is still completely sacked from the war in the 1990's, the invading army used the fort as a post to shell Dubrovnik. From the top Bob pointed out neighboring peaks in Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Albania, and Serbia - all visible on a clear day. On top of the beautiful view there was an unsettling war museum displaying damp missiles in rusty puddles, and with a dripping ceiling which left us sketchbookers cautiously moving through the space to avoid drops while ironically drawing mines. I was impressed the radio tower so I sketched it from roof. It looks like a rocket ship, and seems so out of place next to the moss covered limestone fort.

Lopud

Last weekend we took a day trip to the nearby island of Lopud with Staša's environmental class. On the ferry over, I sketched Shawna with Bob, who was taking a photo the neighboring island of Koloćep among rowdy ACMT students. We made our way from the sleepy town up to the fort on the top of the first hill, from where I sketched a view of the port and its position among the surrounding islands. We wrestled through thorn bushes down to a sandy beach which hadn't woken up for the season yet. The shore line was heaped with washed-up trash and debris, so after I found a pair of mismatched sandals I made a sketch of the beach and overlooking ruins. It made me think about what our culture will leave behind, so when we returned I glued in a piece of the airline barf bag I had been holding on to and made a flip narrative between the 2 pages. For the remainder of the sketchbook, I will be using the waste spread to collect bits of waste from meals and projects.

Modern Art Gallery of Dubrovnik

They had this great show with photos of Croatia from the 1930's and through the 1960's. Most were black and white, and many had these beautiful silhouettes of people walking the streets with these great long shadows. I love the trench coats and hats, reminded me of Dick Tracy. I will be posting a write up of the show soon for my thesis writing class, so stay tuned...

Rooftops After Midnight

This page was from one of the first nights here. Before the tourist arrive in the summer the city is pretty quiet. I had the main Stradun to myself so I posted up, sketched, and wrote a poem.
It says:

I sit and warm stone
watching Dubrovnik rooftops after midnight
wafts of sea breeze and Croatian operatic vocals serenading
vacant streets salute
cat screams sound like children dissolving
leave echo
shoes staccato
murmering flags the thrush snare
voices warm, distant coughs, chairs stacked
stone smooth as glass ripples reflected
lights guide the Stradun by the arm.
Drifting puffs sway and pat
a solid city tastes silence,
asks for a cigarette
then returns to the bar.

I have heard people call this bar the bohemian bar and the fisherman's bar, but I finally found out last night it is called Libertina. It's easily my favorite Dubrovnik bar. The first night, within minutes of walking in I found myself drinking rounds from a sea captain, and chatting with a local gynecologist who advised me which cigarettes were the healthiest. The captain immediately wanted to know the bloodline of everyone at the bar, then after finding a nationality that wasn't present he gave a toast to that country's demise.

The bartender Mario runs the bar with his father Luci, who lives nextdoor. He bought me a beer as I was drawing this; on St. Patrick's Day, it was the only bar without hooligans packed to the gills stumbling over free shots. Later on after I drew it, I showed it to Mario, and he identified all the people in the drawing and where they were from, mostly a street or two away. I gave the drawing to Mario, and he hung it across from the 14th century siege ball.

Luci, who started the bar, was a musician and singer in Dubrovački Trubaduri; a band that gained wide popularity in Europe in the 60's through their appearances in the 1968 Eurovision contest. Heres a video of Luci singing within the Old City, and their Eurovision appearance (Luci with flute).

weeks after meeting the drunken gynecologist, I stopped by the bar one afternoon to find Luci and a shoebox-sized brick of tobacco the doctor had left for me. Harvested by the doc's family in Bosnia, it cannot be legally sold in the Balkans; only received as a gift. After presenting me with the box, Luci had me watch the bar for a moment and returned with papers and his rolling machine. We smoked a few in the bar, which weeks later would become illegal after the April 9th indoor smoking ban in the country.

Even with 3 months of smoking like a European and sharing as many cigarettes as I did, I wasn't able to finish half the box before I left. I took a chance, and somehow brought it home in my checked luggage.
Ask me for a cigarette at the bar one of these days, chances are you can roll a gynecologist-approved Balkan smoke for yourself.

Franciscan Monastery

This is inside the 14th century Franciscan Monastery, near the Pile (pe-lay) gates in the old city. They still have a working old world pharmacy founded in 1317, found down the corridor of the livescribe drawing below. We spent a very wet afternoon sketching here last week, but under the arches we had a great view of the inner courtyard while keeping dry. Every so often one on the grapefruits would fall off the free in front of me and roll into down to the inner cloister. During one of the model's breaks at the Society of Illustrators, I started gabbing with an ancient-looking man in the back who was sitting next to a girl with funky hair. At the end of the night, he invited me to a tour of Chelsea if I was ever in his neighborhood.
Its not every day you get insight into 90 years of experience,
so I took him up on it.
My girlfriend and I met him at 2 the following Thursday. Below are doodles and quotes I scribbled down from the 12 hours we spent exploring the life of Chelsea: walking the pier, digesting the galleries (and some fantastic French food!), listening to lectures, roaming the bars, drinking like fish, and happily overdosing on the art of the city.

It turned out to be one of the best adventures of the trip.

Tuesday nights at the Society of Illustrators, they host a figure drawing session, backed by an open bar and live music. The night we made it down this 2 guy band killed it, covering everything from Herbie Hancock to Joe Cuba. I spent the majority of my time there drawing these guys and gabbing with John Doyel.

Every time I'm in NYC, I end up drawing oodles of people and giving them out, like picture satellites, on napkins, paper scraps, pages from my sketchbooks. Its a great way to gablessly schmooze, but people are way less annoyed if you give them a doodle after you've been candidly grilling them for 10 minutes.

Unfortunately, It leaves me empty handed at the end of each trip...and lacking reference to some great memories. So this time around I brought carbon paper. aside from giving me a carbon copy, It recorded every mark, scratch, mistake. The loose sheet of carbon paper jerked around the page a little as a drew.
By the end, my alternative versions grew on me, slow-shutter drawings of people in motion. Draw on agitation.

RIT's Illustration program has a class where everyone goes down to NYC for a week to OD on art and get loose with your professors...not bad. These are my notes from meetings before the trip.

I love riding the subway in NYC-
people who are reading are great to draw cause they usually dont notice you staring at them. If they do, you can always draw their boots. or wait till they fall asleep.

- at a singing recital for the mama of my boo...shes yellow, hitting the highest note of the night
